Beschreibung:

Anna Mary Robertson Moses (Grandma Moses 1860-1961 Burning of Troy, N,Y., 1862 Signed Moses (ll); dated Feb. 2, 1942, numbered 200 and titled Burning of Troy, N.Y. 1862 on an original Grandma Moses label affixed to the reverse (copyright reserved to Grandma Moses Properties, New York) Oil on masonite 13 x 15 inches Provenance: L.V. Salter, North Rose, New York Literature: Otto Kallir, Grandma Moses New York, 1973, no. 146, p. 288, illustrated The premier American primitivist of the twentieth century, Grandma Moses is known for her distinctively na This particular painting is one of several variations on the theme of the burning of Troy, New York, painted by Moses between 1939 and 1959. The artist drew her inspiration for these works from a story and illustration that she had clipped from a 1939 Troy newspaper. The story recounted the dramatic tale of the historic fire of May 10, 1862, which started with the burning of a covered bridge crossing the Hudson River. Having occurred just miles away from her childhood home, the catastrophe had been the subject of local lore and evidently captured the imagination of the artist. Adding a few pencil lines, Moses embellished the newspaper illustration, transforming its oval shape into a rectangular format, after which she composed her paintings of the subject. She held on to the clipping for years, revisiting the theme and recreating her own imaginative interpretation of this storied event. Estate of Helen B. Beinecke
Frame rubbing. 2 x 2 inch area of inpainting at upper left center over small area of damage. No further apparent restoration. ***Update on condition: Ther area of damage and repair extends down approximately one more inch into the reds of the fire (far left area of the fire). The damage appears to be a reversed C line of damage and repair.
