ANTOINE FRANÇOIS, ABBÉ PRÉVOST D'EXILES (1697-1763), AND OTHERS, EDITORS Histoire Generale des Voyages, ou nouvelle collection de toutes les relations de voyages par mer et par terre . Paris: Didot [and others], 1746-1789. 80 volumes, 12° (162 x 95mm.). Numerous engraved plates and maps (most folding). (Some tears and old creasing to plates, occasional spotting.) Non-uniform contemporary French mottled or cat's-paw sheep, spines gilt in six compartents with raised bands, uniform red morocco lettering-pieces in the second and third, the others with repeat decoration in gilt (light scuffing to extremities, occasional chipping to spines, split to upper joints of vols.57 and 80, vols.28 and 78 lacking one lettering-piece each, some other vols. with chips to head and foot of spines). PROVENANCE: Bernard Carriere (early ownership inscriptions to vols.I-XII). A fine set of the 12° issue of this important set. Hill's remarks on the 20 volume 4° issue are equally applicable here: 'An important and scarce collection, which includes accounts of all the principal early Australian voyages... Also, an account of the discovery of Australia by the Dutch, early voyages to New Guinea and the Palau islands, and Roggeveen's voyage to the Terres Australes. African voyages include the early Portuguese and English voyages to West Africa and the Cape of Good Hope, with a general account of the Dutch at the Cape. Pacific voyages include those of Magellan, Schouten and Le Maire, Drake, Sarmiento, Cavendish, Spilbergen, Narborough, Rogers, Cowley, Frezier, and Anson. Particularly full accounts are given of the Dutch and French voyages to the East Indies, voyages to China, and the British East India Company's voyages to India and Ceylon'. Mitchell notes that the last two volumes include details of Cook's first voyage (cf.Mitchell 723). The set is made up as follows: Histoire Generale des Voyages , Paris, Didot or le Veuve Didot, 1746-1759, vols.I-LX; Table Alphabetique des Matieres contenues dans les LX. volumes.. , Paris, la Veuve Didot, 1761, vols.LXI-LXIV; Suite de l'Histoire Generale des Voyages , Paris, Rozet, 1766, vols.LXV-LXVIII; Continuation de l'Histoire Générale des Voyages , Paris, Rozet (vols.69-72) or Panckoucke (vols.73-76), 1768, vols.LXIX-LXXVI; Continuation de l'Histoire Générale des Voyages , Paris, Maradan, 1789, vols.
