Manuscript edition, with an Autograph Manuscript leaf bound into Volume I, the leaf, blue ink on ruled paper headed ‘Long Primer Pressig. Proof to Sir R.F.B. Hotel des Bains, Canton Vaud, Switzerland’. Photogravure frontispieces and plates, descriptive tissue guards, frontispieces in two states, one hand-colored. Publisher’s full dark green morocco, covers with gilt triple fillet border enclosing an elaborate gilt mosaic design, spines tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments, turn-ins ruled in gilt, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Condition : Spines with a few headbands neatly repaired. “The Manuscript Edition of Captain Sir Richard F. Burton’s translation of The Arabian Nights is a faithful and complete transcription of the original edition dated Benares 1885. there are ninety-nine numbered sets, each having a page of original manuscript and hand colored frontispieces.” (limitation statement in Volume I). Most copies of the Manuscript Edition are lacking the original manuscript page. Not in Penzer.
