Title and chapter headings printed in red, 2- to 5-line initials in red, red capital strokes, MS. quiring in red still visible in some lower margins. (Small tear in 1/2 repaired affecting a few letters, small hole in fo.29 affecting a few letters, very light marginal dampstaining in some leaves, hinge of 15/1.8 reinforced.) Early 20th-century brown morocco, blindstamped in style of the 15th century, maroon paper slipcase. Provenance : erased inscription at top of 1/2r. FIRST EDITION, THE FIRST BOOK PRINTED BY WENSSLER, AND ONE OF THE EARLIEST BOOKS PRINTED AT BASEL, the second printer at Basel. Arnoldi was prior of the Basel Charterhouse, which was closely associated with the printing trade; the monastery lent manuscripts for copy and printers presented their printed books to its library. Arnoldi also wrote a history of the Basel Charterhouse, although the De modo perveniendi ad veram Dei , his treatise on mystical theology which builds on the Christian mystics from Dionysius to Gerson, was his only work printed during his lifetime. The variant readings on fos. 25r, 61r, and 117r agree with the British Library copy IA. 37034.
