Title: Atlas of the United States of North America, Canada, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Mexico, Central America, Cuba, and Jamaica, on a Uniform Scale. From the most recent State Documents, Marine Surveys, and unpublished materials. With Plans of the principal cities and sea-ports, and an introductory essay on the physical geography, products, and resources of North America Author: Rogers, Henry Darwin & A. Keith Johnston Place: London Publisher: John Murray Date: 1857 Description: 20 pp. + 24 double-page lithographed maps, most hand-colored, a few printed in color, & 5 single-page color lithographed city plans. (folio) 36.5x24.5 cm (14¼x9½, original half morocco & cloth, front cover lettered in gilt, all edges gilt. An important atlas of the United States on the eve of the Civil War; the Territory of Nebraska encompasses the Dakotas, Montana, Wyoming, etc., Idaho has yet to be carved out, Utah extends to the California border, as does New Mexico. The proposed railroad lines across the continent are shown. Derived from Rogers and Johnston's large Map of The United States, British & Central America, the Atlas is on a single scale (54.5 miles to one inch), and among the important features is the presence of separate maps of New Mexico, Nebraska, and Utah, as well as Texas and California. Warren Heckrotte offers comment on the maps: "29 maps. Index map, map of United States, 22 regional maps each at scale of 1/3,450,000, approx 54.5 miles to an inch. These are all double page maps. Nine city maps on five pages. Map of United States in full color, and show free and slave holding states; city maps in partial color, and the rest in outline color. Many projected railroad routes are shown - I wonder what the basis for these was. Lake Bigler (Tahoe) is shown too far east in the map of Utah territory. On the map of California the 120º longitude line clips the western part of the lake but its wholly north of the 39º parallel. Goddard's 1857 map of California is the first to show the correct location." On the front free endpaper there is an ink inscription: "Miss M.A. Hayward in remembrance of Henry Darwin Rogers." Mr. Heckrotte speculates "that when Rogers died he had a number of these atlases. So they or some were given to friends with this inscription." Provenance: Old World Auction, 9/1/10 References: P-LG 3670. W-TW 933, map of California; W-TW 634, map of Utah. Vol. 4, p 66, characterizes maps as "outstanding." Lot Amendments Condition: Some rubbing and wear to covers; occasional minor offsetting within; very good. Item number: 271823
