Ballerina Tarock, 1866, Vienna, E. Knepper & Comp., 54 of 54 cards, stencil-colored steel engravings, ace of hearts contains Austrian monarchic tax stamp without indication of value (15 kreuzer, valid 1858-1877), duty tax office number 34, and E. KNEPPER WIEN 1866. Designed by Jos. Benedict. Trumps are full-length figures, double-ended Roman numerals, featuring charming ballerinas seemingly preparing for their imminent appearance on stage (dancers take a step, execute a figure, and rest), courts are double-ended and unnamed, valet of clubs reads, "Wien, Wiedner Hauptstrasse 51," French suits, no indices, square corners. This pack is believed to have been published in honor of the famous Viennese prima ballerina, Fanny Eissler. Backs are interwoven strap work in blue. Size 4 1/8 in. (10.4 cm.) high, 2 1/4 in. (5.7 cm.) wide. The ace and 2 of hearts have been cut down but not hindering the stenciled features nor stamps, minor dust soiling on some pips, faint surface crease on jack of hearts, remnants of ink smear on jack of spades and queen of hearts, otherwise in generally fine condition. Kaplan I, 309.
