BALZAC, Jean-Louis Guez de (1594-1655). Les oeuvres diverses . Paris: Claude Barbin, 1658. 12° (145 x 80mm). Ruled in red. Woodcut and typographical ornaments. (Small marginal stain to first few leaves, quires O-P misbound after K, occasional marginal soiling, S6 with burn mark affecting several letters.) Early 18th-century red morocco gilt attributed to Augustin du Seuil (1673-1746), covers with filleted and dotted borders and inner geometrical compartment with a four-leaf fleuron at centre surrounded by small tools and dots, gilt spine compartments, gilt edges (corners a little bumped and darkened). Provenance : purchased from L. Giraud-Badin, 1926. LARGE PAPER COPY[?]. First edition in small format, including four more pieces than the original edition of 1644. 'Charmante reliure de du Seuil' says the note on front endpaper. Brunet I, 632; Tchemerzine I, p. 382.
