(c.1965)' Estimate: €3,000 - €5,000 For the most part, Barrie Cooke's subject matter consisted of landscapes and the human figure, with the artist occasionally venturing into a more fully-abstract mode, as with his murals in Borris House, Co. Carlow. In this painting, a full length figure of a woman stands, highlighted against a dark background. A horizontal line suggests she is standing in a room, while painting is framed with lighter brown triangles at the corners, hinting at a proscenium arch and the existence of a space within. There is something of Francis Bacon in this work, with Cooke portraying the half-dressed figure in an Expressionist manner that suggests a flayed anatomical study. Paint is pushed and pulled, cut into with the brush handle, allowed to drip, and blended with other colours on the surface of the canvas. The result is a strong Expressionist painting, darker in tone and mood than most of Cooke's work.
