BIBLE, in English. The Holy Bible . London: John Baskett, 1735-34. 8° (201 x 130mm). Engraved title. Double column. (Some browning, some light adhesion of leaves.) Scottish binding of contemporary red morocco with central wheel tooled in gilt, above and below the wheel a pattern of semi-circles, finials, parrot or hawk heads, and dots, stylised thistles at corners, shell shapes at sides, outer roll-tool border between double fillets, six spine compartments with alternate leafy or floral tooling, 'Dutch' floral endpapers, gilt edges (joints repaired, binder's marks on covers). Provenance : Agnes Peacock, the gift of Mr. Murray (19th-century inscription on front endpaper, further inscribed 'Agnes Murray, 1877' at head of A1r). Comparable with Sommerlad Scottish 'Wheel' and 'Herring-bone' Bindings in the Bodleian Library , 1967, no. 5. Herbert 1028 -- and another Scottish wheel binding of black morocco on volume II only of an octavo Bible (New Testament, Oxford, Thomas Baskett, 1751). BIBLE, in English. The Holy Bible . London: John Bill and Christopher Barker 1671-69. [ Bound with :] The Psalms of David in meeter . Edinburgh: Andrew Anderson for Archibald Heislop, 1670. 8° (167 x 111mm.) Engraved title. Double column, Psalms in triple column, ruled in red throughout. (Title laid down, some rules cropped, C3, Aa4, Mm1 torn with slight loss at margins.) 18th-century black morocco gilt, covers with thistle corner-pieces and repeated pear ornament forming a central panel around a 'herring-bone' design of flowers and stars, the remaining ground filled with similar tools, gilt spine panels, 'Dutch' floral pastedowns (some neat restoration to joints, corners bumped). Provenance : 'List of the Bairns Birth days' (dated 1765-77, on title verso). Herbert 705; Wing B-2281A and B-2503A (Psalms). (3)
