Type 1:110R 2 . One 6-line and numerous 3-line initial spaces with guide letters. Opening capital S illuminated by a contemporary Italian artist in gold leaf with white-vine decoration on a red, green and blue ground, smaller initials supplied in red or alternating red and blue. (Short marginal tear to first leaf, inner bifolia of most quires reinforced at gutter, causing some acid-staining, some worming and occasional dampstaining to gutter margins throughout, bifolium 4/5.6 browned.) 18th-century half calf, spine in compartments with gilt fleurons, morocco lettering-pieces (worn, upper cover nearly detached); modern morocco folding case. Provenance : Johann Koch, 16th-century marginal note on fol. 3/5r signalling the passage on Petrarch ("Laus solitarius F. petrarce F. petrarcha preceptor Jo. Boccaccio's alphabetical list of mountains, forests, rivers, and lakes was compiled largely from the writings of the ancient poets. The famous encomium of Boccaccio's friend Petrarch is found in the chapter on sources and springs, under "Sorgia", the underground source of the Sorgue at Fontaine-de-Vaucluse immortalized in the poet's verse. Vindelinus de Spira (or Wendelin of Speier) was the brother of the prototypographer of Venice, Johannes, whom he succeeded upon the latter's sudden death in 1470.
