BOOTH, Thomas Edward (1840-1890). Rough notes on the birds observed during twenty-five years' shooting and collecting in the British Islands . London: Taylor and Francis for R.H. Porter and Messrs. Dulu and Co., 1881-1887. 3 volumes, 2 (427 x 335mm). 114 hand-coloured lithographic plates after Edward Neale 2 coloured maps. Original black half morocco, (extremities rubbed, corners lightly bumped, spines faded), t.e.g. Provenance : Henry Somerville Boynton (armorial bookplate). Booth was a wealthy ornithologist and sportsman. His work, issued in 15 parts, favoured the Scottish Highlands and Norfolk Broads, the plates, drawn by Neale (1833-1904), being after specimens that Booth himself prepared, stuffed and cased. He was particularly concerned to present birds in a characteristic attitude and correct habitat, and this was the basis of the private museum in Dyke Road, Brighton which he built and later bequeathed to the Corporation of Brighton, and for which he produced a catalogue in 1876. Anker 51; Fine Bird Books p. 61; Mullens & Swann p. 84; Nissen VB 121; Wood 249; Zimmer 80.
