FIRST EDITION, containing the second edition of Delle cause della grandezza e magnificenza della città . Botero wrote his treatise on government as a refutation of Machiavelli. He argues that in government honesty can never be sacrificed to the end goal and injustice is never advantageous. Della ragion di stato was immediately reprinted at Rome, Turin, and Milan, and translated into several other languages.
