BOUGUER, Pierre (1698-1758). Traité du navire, de sa construction, et de ses mouvemens . Paris: J. Chardon for Jombert, 1746. 4 o (249 x 187 mm). 12 engraved folding plates, 4 engraved head-piece vignettes (the first with the arms of the dedicatee, Le Comte de Maurepas) by Chedel, woodcut title vignette, initials and tail-pieces, typographic head-piece ornaments, errata leaf and privilege at end. (Occasional light soiling and spotting, some light dampstaining to plates.) Contemporary mottled calf gilt (rebacked preserving original spine). FIRST EDITION of one of the first treatises on naval architecture to discuss the mathematics of shipbuilding, and the first of several useful works on naval architecture and navigation by Bouguer. "The work was very useful to the naval services at the time, and was widely studied, translated and adapted" (Norman 284). Singer, Technology , p.577.
