Collation: a-s 8 t-y 4 (a1r title with woodcut, a1v Locher's epigrams to the reader and letter to Brant dated 1 Feb. 1497, a3v verses by Brant and Locher to each other, to the printer and on Narragonia, a7r Locher's prologue, a8v Brant's verse prologue and argument, b3r text, s6r additional texts by Brant, x4r epigrams by Beccadelli to Brant and Bergmann, x4v colophon, y1r index, y4 blank). 159 (of 160, without final blank) leaves. 30 lines and headline with foliation. Type: 1:109R (text), 2:180G (chapter headings), 3:77R (marginalia). 117 woodcuts, including 5 repeats, by ALBRECHT DüRER THE MASTER OF HAINTZ NARR, THE MASTER OF THE GNAD HERR and two other anonymous woodcut artists, printer's device, two Lombard initials, two floral border-pieces to device. (A few small spots, headlines shaved, a few underlinings.) 19th-century citron straight-grained morocco, spine lettered in gilt (very lightly scuffed at extremities). Provenance : Edward Vernon Utterson (1776?-1856, booklabel, sale Sotheby's, 20 March 1857, lot 228, £2.11 to:) -- Upham and Beet, booksellers in New Bond St., London (ticket), purchased from them in 1858 (partly erased flyleaf inscription) -- WE (monogram on flyleaf) -- M. Gonse (20th-century booklabel). FIRST ENLARGED EDITION of a highly influential satire cataloguing the follies of human weakness and vice. It went through 26 editions by the end of the 15th century in German, Latin, Dutch and French, and continued to be printed well into the 16th century. Erasmus is one of many who adopted Brant's form for his own satire, Moriae encomium . In the present edition the reference to the discovery of America appears on f. 76v. The fine woodcut illustrations -- also highly influential -- are those created for the first edition of 1494, with a few additions to the series from earlier Bergmann editions.
