BROOKE, Rupert (1887-1915). Typescript of a one-act play, Lithuania , inscribed in an unidentified hand on the title page 'Given to A.R. by the author', 24 pages, 4° , together with a copy of the first English edition (1935). Rupert Brooke's only play was drafted in Berlin in the early summer of 1912. He wrote to a friend 'I sit in a luxurious pension ... and write plays about murders in Lithuania'. He referred to it in letters to Frances Cornford and Edward Marsh, and in 1913 a copy was sent to Granville Barker who was said to be impressed by it. John Drinkwater and Cathleen Nesbitt (whom he hoped would play in it) also received copies. In 1914 Brooke visited Chicago, and the play was published and received its first performance at the Little Theatre there in 1915. John Drinkwater wrote the introduction to the first English edition twenty years later. 'A.R.', to whom the typescript was given by Brooke, may be Albert Rothenstein, who was among his friends at Cambridge and corresponded with him on theatrical matters.
