BURNEY, James, Capt. A Chronological History of North-Eastern Voyages of Discovery; and of the early Eastern Navigations of the Russians . London: Luke Hansard & Sons, for Payne and Foss, and John Murray 1819.
BURNEY, James, Capt. A Chronological History of North-Eastern Voyages of Discovery; and of the early Eastern Navigations of the Russians . London: Luke Hansard & Sons, for Payne and Foss, and John Murray 1819. 8 o (227 x 141 mm). 2 engraved folding maps (the first with tear crossing image). Modern boards, uncut. Provenance : Mary Farnworth (signature on front flyleaf); Thomas W. Streeter (bookplate; his sale part VI, Parke Bernet, 22 April 1969, lot 3510; purchased from Henry Stevens, 1943). FIRST EDITION. Burney sailed as Rear Admiral aboard the Resolution and lieutenant on the Discovery before being transferred to the Resolution on Clerke's death. This volume contains an intimate account of Cook's third voyage, including accounts on the northwest coast of America and the passage through the Bering Strait, not found elsewhere. The two maps are of the north coast of Asia and Barents Sea. It is extremely unusual for an early account of navigational discovery to have a contemporary female provenance. Hill 223; Holmes 82; Howes B-1001; Mitchell Library Cook 1657-8; Sabin 9386; Streeter sale VI:3510 (this copy).
