Read more Camille Souter Lot 27 - 'Winter Shannon' Estimate: €6,000 - €8,000 Famously restless, and single-minded in pursuit of her artistic aims, Camille Souter spent about a year living in an apartment close to Shannon Airport towards the end of the 1970s. She had visited the area as a child with her parents, and now two of her own children were in boarding school nearby. Greatly taken by the vast expanses of the airport landscapes, she felt impelled to make paintings there. Immediately, however, there was a problem. Airfields are high security zones, and getting airside, on the inside of the boundary fences, was simply not possible. The fence actually features in some of the first paintings she made. Then she noticed that there was a flying school, and its students seemed free to come and go without any problems, so her solution was to enroll for flying lessons. In the event, she was enthralled by the experience of being airborne in a small plane, and was inspired to create one of her most striking and memorable series of works. She also, apparently, preferred bad weather, as Winter Shannon suggests. The composition is a dizzying amalgam of cloud, reflection, runway markings and shadow that leaves the viewer suspended in a swirling aerial space. Born Betty Pamela Holmes in Northampton, Souter became an artist revered by peers, critics and the public from her earliest exhibitions in the mid-1950s, even though she earned the reputation of being publicity-shy. She is celebrated for her unorthodox approach to familiar genres such as still life, landscape and animals. Strongly associated with Achill Island, where she had a home, she also worked industriously throughout Ireland and abroad. Aidan Dunne, June 2023
