Artist: Camille Souter HRHA (b.1929) Title: Basking Sharks, Achill Signature: signed lower right & dated 1959 Medium: oil on board Size: 58 x 38½cm (23 x 15in) Provenance: James Adam's, Dublin in the 1970's Private Collection, Dublin By Descent More info: Click to read more about this lot In early 1959 Camille Souter returned to Ireland from Italy and spent the next few years living and painting on Achill Island. Although primarily associated with abstract expressionism most of Camille Souter's work retains a figurative element. At times Souter's work appears to be at the point where abstract imagery becomes sufficiently recognisable for us to characterise it as representational. The work she produced during this period in Achill is highly successful and the series is extremely important within the Artist's oeuvre. The subject painting is surely one of the strongest of the Achill series and unusually for her paintings from this period incorporates beautiful pools of color reflecting off the beached sharks stretched skin as the water moves in on the strand. Camille Souter is an Honorary member of the RHA and a member of Aosdána. She was elected Saoi of Aosdána in a ceremony presided in 2009, where she was presented with the symbol of the office of Saoi, the gold Torc. Souter continues to live and work on Achill Island.
