Philadelphia: Engraved for, and Published by: Mathew Carey, 1795 Folio (approximately 230 x 370 mm). 21 engraved maps, including the chart of the West Indies, by Samuel Lewis and Amos Doolittle; offsetting, some browning or spotting, splits to folds, marginal repairs. Half modern calf and contemporary marbled paper-covered boards; rebacked to style, rubbed with significant loss. Clamshell case. First edition of the first American atlas published in America Most of the maps are captioned "Engraved for Carey's American edition of Guthrie's Geography Improved" (Evans 27077). The atlas also includes the first map published in America of Virginia as a state.
