CARTA EXECUTORIA DE HIDALGUIA, issued by Philip II, King of Spain, in favour of Francisco de Lobiano, in Spanish, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM. [Granada, 13 November 1570] 320 x 215mm. 78 leaves: 1 4 8 (including front pastedown), 2 3 2 (including rear pastedown), 34 lines written in black ink, notary's endorsement in lower margin of each recto, eighteen large initials of liquid gold on red or blue grounds, PORTRAIT MINIATURE OF PHILIP II, FOUR FULL-PAGE MINIATURES. (Some small pigment losses, particularly affecting first two miniatures, occasional surface soiling.) CONTEMPORARY SPANISH OLIVE GOATSKIN GILT over wooden boards, the sides panelled with roll-tooled borders of Classical and helmeted profile heads in medallions linked by scrolling foliage, and martial accoutrements, compartments stamped with tools of a lion, a monkey playing bagpipes, a bird, a unicorn and a deer (spine skilfully repaired in places, lacking clasps). Modern cloth box with morocco gilt lettering piece and the Abbey arms in gilt on upper cover. Provenance : John Roland Abbey (1894-1969), his bookplate pasted inside upper cover -- bought from Quaritch 14 March 1952 (J.A. 5605 inscribed on lower pastedown) -- sold Sotheby's 20 June 1978, lot 2997. A decorative carta executoria in an EXTREMELY FINE GRANADAN BINDING, issuing a patent of nobility in favour of Francisco de Lobiano of Seville. Subjects of the illuminations are as follows: f.1v Crucifixion, with the kneeling figures of the recipient and his wife; f.2 Virgin standing in a cresent moon in a mandorla of putti and clouds, with God above; f.2v St James on horseback vanquishing three Moors; f.3 Armorial miniature with the arms of Francisco de Lobiano with elaborate mantling; f.76 Bust-length portrait of Philip II in armour.
