CARTA EXECUTORIA of Martin Sanchez de Soto, issued by Philip IV of Spain, in Spanish, DECORATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM, [Valladolid, 19 August 1625
CARTA EXECUTORIA of Martin Sanchez de Soto, issued by Philip IV of Spain, in Spanish, DECORATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM, [Valladolid, 19 August 1625] 280 x 200mm. i + 44 + i leaves (apparently intended to open with full-page miniatures, some darkening and soiling, occasional small losses to the margins, later notes on the frontispage). CONTEMPORARY PANELLED CALF , elaborately gilt stamped and with the lead seal of Philip IV (some losses and darkening of the gilt. seal detached). Provenance : gift inscription to A.H. Bright from Henry Yates Thompson, 1894 (likely acquired in Seville, along with the preceding lot). The statement of nobility from Martin Sanchez de Soto of Villalpando (Castile y León) follows the standard format for such documents, presenting to the town council and good men of Villalpando his petition for the recognition of his right, by virtue of his noble blood, to be exempt from taxation, and reclaiming any dues and tributes taken from him up to this point. A decorated initial introduces each supporting testimony from other honourable citizens and certain rubric phrases are also rendered thus; it seems likely that f.1v and f. 2 were intended to bear decorative miniatures.
