Engraved portrait frontispiece of the author by David Loggan additional title, folding map, 15 plates (11 folding), engraved title vignette, 3 headpieces, 2 tailpieces and 3 initials. (Old dampstain throughout, 6 plates with tears, marginal in the main but one with slight loss and a second extending 200mm. across the image, small paperfault hole in Ppp1.) Contemporary speckled calf, spine gilt (affected by damp). FIRST EDITION. Chardin was driven from France by the persecutuion of the Protestants, settling in London he soon became court jeweller to Charles II. The present account describe his travels as agent for the purchase of jewels to Shah Solyman III, and his journeys to Russia and India in 1664-1669 and 1671-1677. Wing C-2041.
