CHAUCER, GEOFFREY The workes of our antient and lerned English poet, Geffrey Chaucer, . London: Printed by Adam Islip, at the charges of Bonham Norton, 1598. Full early brown calf. 11 3/4 x 7 3/4 inches (30 x 20 cm); Frontispiece, engraved title, [8] pp. including the Frances Beaumont introductory matter, [12] ff. life of Chaucer, [8] ff. epistle and Prologues, engraved section title, [6] ff. Chaucer's Prologue and 394 numbered leaves (with erratic printer's foliation errors), [14] terminal leaves, including final blank; collates [a]^(6) b-c^(6) [par.]^(4) A-V^(6) 2A-2T^(6) 2V-2X^(8) 2Y-4A^(6) 4B^(8). Front board detached, binding worn; the frontispiece and title frayed (the latter separating at the gutter margin), but these leaves largely complete; some toning and staining to the text, worming in the bottom margin towards the center of the work, but overall in about average condition for this work. This copy does not have the errata leaf. Edited by Frances Speght, this is an important Elizabethan edition. It includes a number of works spuriously attributed to Chaucer, including "The siege of Thebes" by John Lydgate. ESTC S107209; STC (2nd ed.), 5078. C
