Autograph letter signed to the Bishop of Manchester (James Moorhouse), 105 Mount Street, 3 May 1903, 'I have been urged to make representations on behalf of Mr Waddington who is desirous of obtaining a living & whose parents are constituents of mine in Oldham', asking the Bishop to 'tell me in confidence whether this gentleman is in fact an adequate person for preferment', two pages, 8vo , annotated by recipient. Provenance : Swann, 17 September 1992, lot 64.

Churchill had promised Waddington's father in November 1900 as a 'sacred trust' to find a preferment for his son (see lot 30), but was evidently somewhat slow in pursuing this.
