CHURCHILL, Winston S. My Early Life, A Roving Commission . London: Thornton Butterworth Limited, 1930. 8 o . Illustrated. Purple cloth stamped in gilt, IN THE RARE FIRST ISSUE DUST JACKET (slightly chipped at edges). Provenance : J. Ramsey MacDonald (1866-1937) (presentation inscription on flyleaf; his bookplate on front pastedown); Sotheby's London, 15 July 1998, lot 155. FIRST EDITION, ADVANCE PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed on front flyleaf "To Ramsey Macdonald from Winston S. Churchill Oct. 14 1930." Churchill inscribed this to the great former Labour prime minister six days before publication. MacDonald acknowledged the gift by doubting he would ever reciprocate with a memoir of his own, "unless some old fishwife turns biographer. You are an interesting cuss," he told Churchill--"I, a dull one" (quoted in Gilbert). Properly regarded by many as Churchill's greatest book, it conveys both his literary genius and his remarkable personality better than any other work in his vast corpus. Harold Nicholson likened the pleasure of reading it to "a beaker of Champagne." A wonderful association of these two important 20th century prime ministers. Woods A37(a).
