GRANT, Ulysses S. Personal Memoirs of U.S. Grant. New York: Charles L. Webster & Company, 1886. 2 volumes, 8vo. Frontispieces, engravings, maps. (Minor toning.) Publisher's original green cloth gilt (light scuffing). Provenance: Omar S. Decker (1885 ownership inscription, bookplates). FIRST EDITION of Grant's memoirs written at the end of his life before he perished from throat cancer. The publication, with help from Mark Twain, ensured the financial security of his family upon his death. -- JOHNSON, Robert Underwood (1853-1937) and Clarence Clough BUEL (1850-1933), editors. Battles and Leaders of the Civil War. New York: The Century Co., 1887. 4 volumes, 4to. Illustrated. Original publishers quarter dark brown morocco gilt with marbled boards, spine in 5 compartments with 4 raised bands gilt (heavy wear to joints, boards partially detached in some volumes). Provenance: H.W. Stephens (1901 ownership inscription. FIRST EDITION of Johnson and Buel's monumental history of the Civil War. -- Together, 2 works in 6 volumes. [With:] Later enlargement of an outdoor formal group shot of a Civil War company. N.p., n.d. 13 1/2 x 10 1/2 in.. silver gelatin on cardstock mount. (chipping to edges; mount with loss, warping, toned). A later enlargement from an image taken during the Civil War.
