Collection of leaves from illuminated manuscripts, in Latin, on vellum 5 leaves, including (a) large initial 'I' on a cutting, 112mm. by 126mm., with the letter formed from organic foliage and branches touched in liquid gold, set before the Garden of Eden portrayed as a landscape of meadows, woods and an ocean, teeming with animals (with two rabbits, a lion, a stag, a cow, a camel, and whales fighting in the sea), God as a crowned king in the foreground awakening Eve while Adam lies on a grassy mound, all before a wide open sky with numerous birds and the sun and moon, laid down on card mount, in excellent condition, Germany, early sixteenth century; (b) single leaf from a Book of Hours, 151mm. by 79mm., 33 lines in black ink in a fine and precise humanistic hand, some letters in liquid gold, red and blue, numerous 1-line initials in liquid gold on coloured grounds, line-fillers in same, one 4-line initial 'D' (opening "Deus in adiutorium ...") in white on liquid gold grounds touched in penwork and framed with blue, full border decoration on recto with liquid gold architectural motifs on green ground, and simple rope-like text frame in liquid gold on verso, cut down to edge of border decoration and somewhat damp-stained with some tiny holes, else good condition, northern France (perhaps Paris), first decades of sixteenth century; (c) text leaf from a Psalter, 262mm. 169mm., 18 lines in black ink in a fine late Gothic hand, rubrics in blue, fourteen small 1-line initials in burnished gold on delicate coloured grounds touched in liquid gold, one 2-line initial in green, pink and blue, enclosing a single flower on burnished gold ground, border panel on recto of scrolling foliage in liquid gold on a burgundy-red ground within a gold frame, terminating at base in coloured leaves and bezants, Italy (Florence), c. 1500; plus a bifolium from a early sixteenth-century German Lectionary, and a nineteenth-century Crucifixion miniature executed in a fifteenth-century Ghent-Bruges style, with a full border of coloured acanthus-leaves; all in excellent condition and in card mounts
