The Territories of Washington and Oregon. New York: J. H. Colton, 1854. Engraved hand-colored pocket map, 356 x 432 mm. 355 x 430 mm. Folded into publisher's blind-stamped cloth covers, titled in gilt on the upper cover, publisher's advertisement on the front pastedown. A RARE SEPARATELY-ISSUED POCKET MAP OF WASHINGTON AND OREGON TERRITORIES: THE FIRST ISSUE OF COLTON'S MAP OF THOSE NEWLY-FORMED WESTERN TERRITORIES. This 1854 pocket map version precedes Colton's 1855-56 Atlas of the World. Unlike the later sheet map version, this map only shows three counties in western Washington Territory (Lewis, Pacific and Clark) and ten counties in western Oregon (Clatsop, Washington, Yam Hill, Clackamas, Polk, Marion, Benton, Linn, Lake and a large Umpqua county), and does not include the Stevens route of the proposed Pacific Railroad, whose survey was ongoing. Smith, p 55; Streeter Sale 3896 (1855 edition).
