COMMINES, Philippe de. Les Mémoires... Dernière édition. Leiden: chez les Elzeviers (i.e. Bonaventura & Abraham), 1648. 12° (128 x 73mm). With final blank. Engraved historiated title. Binding by Charles-François-Capé: dark blue morocco, covers tooled with an elaborate fanfare design, with the royal arms of France at the centre, spine in six compartments with raised bands, lettered in two, the others with a repeat pattern composed from various small tools, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, g.e., signed at foot of front turn-in. The gilding, en légèreté , is possibly the work of Jean Marius Michel He is known to have carried out work for Capé at this time, and very high artistic and technical quality of this binding would support this theory. Delteil. Annuaire des Ventes , IV, 1922/1923 describes this copy as "Bel exemplaire grande de marges, dans une remarquable reliure... de Capé". Tchemerzine II,pp.470-471; Willems 634.
