[Third Voyage:] A Voyage to the Pacific Ocean, for making Discoveries in the Northern Hemisphere, performed under the Direction of Captains Cook, Clerke, and Gore, in His Majesty's Ships the Resolution and Discovery; in the years 1776, 1777, 1778, 1779 and 1780 . London: H. Hughes for G. Nicol and T. Cadell, 1785. 3 volumes, 4° (294 x 235mm). Engraved medallion on each title by I. Hogg, 87 engraved maps and plates, 14 folding, one double-page, 1 folding letterpress table, as called for, and WITH 5 ADDITIONAL PLATES: portrait of Cook after N. Dance by J.K. Sherwin; portrait of Cook after Dance by Hollonray, published by C. Forster, 1 Jan. 1790; portrait of Cook after Webber by F. Bartolozzi, published by J. Webber, 4 June 1784; portrait of James King after J. Webber by F. Bartolozzi, published 4th June 1784; 'The Death of Captain Cook' after Webber and W. Byrne by Bartolozzi, published by Byrne, 1 July 1785; portrait of Omai IN PROOF after Dance by F. Bartolozzi, bearing copyright 25 October 1774. (Some spotting, browning, and offsetting, the extra proof plate of Omai trimmed at left edge and with short tear at guard, repaired marginal tear to title of vol. III.) Contemporary calf gilt, red and black leather spine labels, blue sprinkled edges (rebacked in sheep, slightly worn). Second edition, complete, with the plates, which are sometimes in a separate 'atlas' volume, bound in; extra-illustrated with 5 plates. After having made in effect a running survey of the west coast of America as far as the Icy Cape, Cook turned the Resolution and the Discovery back to the Sandwich Islands, where he was killed by islanders in February 1779. He was succeeded by Captain Charles Clerk (1741-1779), who lasted only six months, and by Captain James King Hill pp. 61-62; Mitchell Library, Cook , 1543. (3)
