COOPER, James Fenimore. Proceedings of the Naval Court Martial in the Case of Alexander Slidell Mackenzie...to which is Annexed, an Elaborate Review . New York: Henry G. Langley, 1844.
COOPER, James Fenimore. Proceedings of the Naval Court Martial in the Case of Alexander Slidell Mackenzie...to which is Annexed, an Elaborate Review . New York: Henry G. Langley, 1844. 4 o (231 x 148 mm). 10pp. publishers' advertisements dated 1844 at end. (Some spotting.) Original black cloth, decorated in blind, lettered in gilt (a bit scuffed, chipped at the head and foot of the spine); modern quarter red morocco gilt slipcase. BAL 3913; Sabin 16515; Spiller and Blackburn p. 203. [ With :] [COOPER, James Fenimore.] The Cruise of the Somers: Illustrative of the Despotism of the Quarter-deck; and the Unmanly Conduct of Commander MacKenzie . New York: J. Winchester, 1844. 12 o (165 x 106 mm). 6 pp. publisher's advertisements at the end. (Some spotting, a few pale stains.) Contemporary quarter blue morocco, black cloth, lettered in gilt on the spine (head and foot of the spine chipped, rubbed). FIRST EDITION. WITH AUTHORSHIP ATTRIBUTED TO COOPER ON THE TITLE-PAGE IN A CONTEMPORARY HAND. The Library of Congress Catalogue and Blackburn & Spiller also attribute authorship of The Cruise to Cooper. Beard however remains doubtful, as did James Grossman before him: "It purports to be by a man who at the time of writing is a professional seaman; and in later editions, in reprinting as an appendix to the pamphlet three letters on the Somers written to the Boston Courier by a shipmaster, William Sturgis, the author of The Cruise states...that he did not see the Sturgis letters when they first appeared as he was then on a foreign voyage. Cooper was of course not on a foreign voyage, and in fact read Sturgis's letters... and wrote about them at the time...both to his wife and to Sturgis." BAL p. 308-309; Beard Letters and Journals IV p. 482; Sabin 17725 (recording the third edition); Spiller and Blackburn 40.
