CRAIG, William Marshall Description of the Plates representing the Itinerant Traders of London in their Ordinary Costume; with notices of the remarkable places given in the background . [London: Richard Phillips 1804]. 4° (264 x 207mm). 31 hand-coloured etched plates, after Craig, all but 7 within a grey wash border. (Title and first few leaves very lightly browned, outer margin of first plate slightly short, closed marginal tear to description of plate 11, plate 24 with four small punch holes in outer margin, light offsetting from plates, light spotting.) Blue morocco gilt, gilt inner dentelles, gilt edges (extremities lightly rubbed). Provenance: purchased from Woodin, 7 January 1942. FIRST EDITION, issued as a supplement to Richard Phillips Modern London: being the Present State of the British Metropolis (London, 1804). The plates provide an interesting insight into the teeming street life of the early 19th-century. Abbey Life 271.
