CROMWELL, Oliver (1599-1658). Document signed (as Protector, 'Oliver P.'), an order addressed 'To the Com[mittee] of the Admiraltie', n.p., 20 July 1655, one page, 4to (browned, laid down on card, some wear to folds). Cromwell orders the commissioners to provide 'a fittinge and convenient ship of Warre of good Countenance' in order to transport to Hamburg the newly-appointed 'Agent unto the King of Sweden', [Edward] Rolt, 'with his retinue and baggage'. Captain Edward Rolt was a cousin of Cromwell's, and was a Gentleman of the Bedchamber in the Protector's court. He is mentioned in Pepys's diary in May and June 1661, usually in convivial circumstances ('formerly too great a man to meet upon such even terms').
