Watercolor illustration. 11.5 x 15 in., matted and framed to 17 x 21 in. Depicting three flags of the Confederate States of America: the "Stars and Bars" with 13 stars, the "Stainless Banner," and the Battle Flag of the Army of Northern Virginia. With the first verse of the poem "The Conquered Banner." Written by Catholic priest and Confederate Army chaplain Father Abram Joseph Ryan who wrote the verse after Lee's surrender at Appomattox and first published in the pro-Confederate Catholic newspaper the New York Freeman. It became enormously popular in the post-war South, especially in the period from 1890-1920 when the "Lost Cause" ideology gained momentum and Jim Crow laws were being introduced. Condition: Not examined out of the frame.
