The first volume here, A New Voyage Round the World, recounts Dampier's voyage from South America across the Pacific to the East Indies and whilst traveling extensively in that region between 1683 and 1691, the first landing of an Englishman on Australian soil. The return to England was by way of the Cape of Good Hope. The second volume, Voyages and Descriptions, contains supplementary material relating to his circumnavigation. The success of the first voyage was such that the British Admiralty commissioned Dampier to conduct surveys of New Holland, or Australia, aboard the Roebuck. The third and fourth volumes describe this expedition, also containing information on South America, South Africa and the East Indies, as well as his conclusion of Australia that "it is not yet determined whether it is an island or a main continent; but I am certain that it joyns neither Asia, Africa, nor America".
