DANIELL, William (1769-1837, illustrator) and Richard AYTON (1786-1823). A Voyage Round Great Britain, undertaken in the summer of the year 1813, and commencing from the Land's-End, Cornwall. London: T. Davison for Longman [and partners] and William Daniell 1814-1825. 8 volumes in 4, large 4° (360 x 247mm). One folding engraved chart of Great Britain, uncoloured aquatint dedication and 308 hand-coloured aquatint plates within grey wash borders by and after William Daniell With errata leaf at end of vol. I, plate list at end of vol. II and letterpress dedication in vols. III-VI and VIII. (Two clean, long tears and one small hole in map, title to vol. I creased, occasional spotting to plate margins, small paper flaw in plate of the Lighthouse, Holyhead, a few isolated spots on images in vols. VII-VIII, intermittent spotting to titles and text, without the uncoloured plate of Kemaes Head.) Mid-19th-century half calf, marbled edges (rubbed, some joints cracked). Provenance : I. Little Hales M.D. (bookplate) -- H.M. Gilbert, Southampton (bookseller's label). 'THE MOST IMPORTANT COLOUR PLATE BOOK ON BRITISH TOPOGRAPHY' in Tooley's judgement, 'valuable as a record and exquisite in its presentation.' The venture was originally planned by Daniell who asked Ayton to contribute the descriptions, publication beginning in monthly parts on 1st January 1814. However, the partnership only endured for the first two volumes, after which Ayton turned to adapting comedies for the English Opera House. The text was thereafter diminished, and publication ceased to be on a monthly basis after 1st December 1820. The watermarks in volumes I, IV, VII and VIII of this copy appear to conform with those in the Abbey copy; other volumes have slightly later watermarks as follows: II. 1815-1819; III. 1816-18; V. 1825; VI. 1824.
