Condition reportThe following condition report is provided by Henry Gentle who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's:
The painting is lined and there is good adhesion between the original canvas and the lining fabric.
A small 15 x 1 cm diagonal damage, half way up the left hand side, between the birds and the tree, has been conserved.
The paint layer is stable, but presents as slightly raised under raking light.
U-V light shows a scattering of fine restorations across the sky, in particular. It appears that many of these are unnecessary and have been applied to mitigate natural discolouration, old varnish and dirt residue, especially in the interstices of the texture brushwork, rather than paint loss.
There is some pin prick paint loss and evidence of reduced canvas texture.
The texture of the bravura brushwork is well preserved across the composition and the energetic sketchiness through the figures and the foreground is well maintained.
Fine details to the figures are preserved and the chromatic integrity through the foreground is in a good original condition.
Some fading of the blue pigment in the sky has occurred.
Glazing through the foliage of the central tree has been compromised and a loss of form has resulted.
The painting presents well.
