DERZHAVIN, Gavrila Romanovich (1743-1816). Oda Urna . [Ode: The Urn]. Vilnius: Manes and Zymel, 1823. 8° (192 x 120mm). Bilingual Russian and Polish text on facing leaves. Engraved allegorical frontispiece. Contemporary red morocco, gilt frame to sides with on-laid green morocco frame, gilt inner dentelles, green endpapers, gilt edges. In handsome contemporary red morocco. Derzhavin, 'the most gifted of all eighteenth-century Russian poets' (Whittaker), is remembered primarily for his odes. The use of Polish in Lithuania was prohibited after the November Uprising of 1830. SK 1801-1825 records another ode, 'Bog', published in Vilnius the previous year (n.2243), but not this one. Cf.
