RICHARD BENTLEY 1838 8vo, first edition, 3 volumes, etched frontispiece and 21 plates by George Cruikshank first issue with "fireside" plate at the end of volume 3, uncancelled title page and without imprint at foot of the spines, two leaves of advertisements at the end of volume 1, half-titles in volumes 1 and 2 (as called for), original horizontally-ribbed cloth (Smith's binding variant), arabesque design stamped in blind on upper and lower covers, upper and lower covers with arabesque design in blind, lettered in gilt on the spine, pale yellow endpapers, preserved in matching quarter brown morocco folding box, some very light spotting, very minor flaw or damage to few letters in two words on p.150 of volume 2, hinges neatly repaired, minor wear and fading to covers
