DING YANYONG (1902-1978) Frogs Scroll, mounted and framed, ink on paper 69.5 x 136 cm. (27 3/8 x 53 1/2 in.) Inscribed and signed, with one seal of the artist Dated autumn, renzi year (1972) Dedicated to Shiwen In the upper colophon the painting is dedicated to Chen Shiwen](1908-1984)^, a long-time friend of the artist. After his studies in France, Chen returned to Shanghai and formed the Nine Artists' Circle in 1945 with Ding Yanyong Guan Liang, Ni Yide, Zhou Bichu, Tang Yun, Zhu Jiqian, Qian Ding and Song Zhongyuan. This group held regular meetings to discuss both Eastern and Western art. In 1956 Chen was invited to Hong Kong by Qian Mu, the headmaster of The New Asia College at the Hong Kong Chinese University to put together the curriculum for their arts programme, as well as to arrange wider art events to promote art and culture in Hong Kong.
