Document signed (“E Young”), assigning for £100 to Robert and James Dodsley “of St James´s in the County of Middlesex Booksellers” half the copyright of “a certain book entitled The Centaur not Fabulous. In Six Letters to a Friend, on the Life in Vogue. Wrote by the said Edward Young”, signed as witness by John Shotbolt, with 1/6d duty blind-stamps at the head, one page, folio, integral blank, trace of seal, marked with the inventory number 49 at the head, Young and Shotbolt´s signature made with an over-full quill (with consequent smudging and some loss of paper at the centre edge where the ink had oxidised, affecting one or two words), repairs at right-hand margin, 26 August 1755 AN EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY PUBLISHING CONTRACT: Young´s Centaur not Fabulous – “a kind of ‘Night Thoughts´ in prose” (DNB) – was published by Dodsley in 1755, and ran through two editions before the end of the year.
