Modern red calf gilt, original French blue cloth bound in at end, edges gilt (slight wear to extremities). Provenance : Sophia Christiana Taylor (presentation inscription by Dodgson on half-title). FIRST EDITION IN FRENCH, PRESENTATION COPY inscribed by Dodgson on the half title: "Sophia Christina[a] Taylor, from the Author, 1869." Carroll gave this presentation copy to "Christie" Taylor probably on the occasion of his visit to Guilford, were he photographed her on Sep. 3. 1869, shortly after the publication in July. The second foreign-language edition of Alice (preceded by the German translation earlier the same year), Williams-Madan-Green-Crutch 73.
