DRAYTON, Michael (1563-1631). A Chorographicall Description of all the Tracts, Rivers, Mountains, Forests, and other parts of this renowned isle of Great Britain , London: [Augustine Mathewes for] John Marriott, John Grismand, and Thomas Dewe, 1622. 2 parts in one volume, small 2° (278 x 184mm.), engraved allegorical title depicting Britannia seated beneath a triumphal arch, additional printed title, engraved portrait of Prince Henry and 30 double-page maps, title, portrait and the first 18 maps by William Hole (clean tears along centre fold of two maps, two others torn with slight loss of image or border and two with small adhesive marks, a few tears with marginal loss, small wormhole from p. 249 in pt. I onwards, occasional light marginal thumb-soiling), contemporary panelled calf, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, sprinkled edges (quite rubbed, head of spine chipped). Provenance: Philip Bliss (bookplate); "of Parker, Oxon 1829" (inscription on endpaper). FIRST EDITION, third issue of the first title, second state of the portrait and first issue of the second part. Poly-Olbion was Drayton's most ambitious work, in which he intended to patriotically awaken his readers to the beauties and glories of their country. It consists of thirty "Songs", each of 300-500 lines, which describe or at least enumerate Great Britain's principal typographical features. STC 7227 & 7229; Pforzheimer 308 & 309.
