Erste Ausgabe. - Die französische Naturphilosophin, Physikerin und Mathematikerin Gabrielle Emilie Du Chatelet gilt als einer der größten Geister der Aufklärungszeit. Sie trug zur Verbreitung der Theorien von Leibniz und ihre 1756 posthum veröffentlichte Übersetzung von Newtons Principia gilt bis heute als Standardübersetzung ins Französische. Ihr Kommentar enthält einen tiefgreifenden Beitrag zur Newtonschen Mechanik. Überdies forderte sie die Teilhabe von Frauen an allen Menschenrechten. - Die Institutions de Physique enthalten eine Übersicht der neuen wissenschaftlichen und philosphischen Ideen und gaben Anlass zu lebhaften Kontroversen in intellektuellen Kreisen. - Stellenweise gebräunt bzw. braunfleckig. Physics - First edition. - With 1 engr. frontispiece, 1 engr. title, 11 fold. copper plates and 22 vignettes. - The French natural philosopher, physicist and mathematician Gabrielle Emilie Du Chatelet is considered one of the greatest minds of the Enlightenment era. She contributed to the circulation of Leibniz's theories and her translation of Newton's Principia, published posthumously in 1756, is still considered the standard translation into French. Her commentary contains a profound contribution to Newtonian mechanics. She also called for the participation of women in all human rights. - The Institutions de Physique contain an overview of the new scientific and philosophical ideas and gave rise to vivid controversy in intellectual circles. - Contemporary calf with gilt title and rich gilt tooling to the spine (somewhat rubbed, corners slightly bumped). - Browned or brownstained in places. Few leaves slightly torn in the gutter. Altogether beautiful copy.
