Anatolia
c. second half 17th century, Romania is home to one of the most impressive collections of surviving antique Oriental rugs from the Ottoman Empire. This vibrant antique 17th century carpet is an excellent example of those that survived. Collectively, classical rugs like this are referred to as "Transylvanian rugs" (even though they were probably woven in western Anatolia) because it is here that large collections of them were found. These early rugs have only survived by being used in German Gothic churches throughout Transylvania. It is estimated that the number of surviving examples of these rugs is only in the hundreds. The Ottoman Empire ruled Romania from 1526-1699, which is during the time when this rug was produced.
Transylvanian carpets are often smaller, with borders that contain cartouches filed with counter-changed flowers and plants. The motifs are often angular and large in relation to the overall proportions of the carpet. The field of the 17th century rug is filled with geometric motifs such as flowers, lozenges, rosettes, and other traditional Turkish rug design elements. This is an essential piece for any collection, and it would be the focal point of any interior design.
Provenance: Sotheby's Lot 280 6/5/2019
