EDWARD L. LOPER, SR. (1916 - 2011) The Garden. Oil on linen canvas, circa 1950. 762x914 mm; 30x36 inches. Signed in oil, upper left recto. Signed and titled in ink, verso. Provenance: private collection, New York. The Garden is an excellent example of the modernist approach to landscapes of Edward L. Loper, one of Delaware's finest early 20th Century artists. Born in Wilmington, Delaware, Loper studied at the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia for over 10 years. He is often associated with his work for the WPA Art Project from 1936-1941. He also taught at the Delaware Art Museum, Lincoln University and the Jewish Community Center in Delaware. Loper's work is in permanent collections at the Philadelphia Art Museum, the Delaware Art Museum, the Corcoran Gallery, Howard University, the Museum of African American Art, Tampa, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and Clark-Atlanta University Collection of African American Art.
