First English translation. "After many experiments on the action of synthetic drugs upon spirochaetal diseases, Ehrlich and Hata in 1909 discovered salversan ('606')" (Garrison-Morton-Norman 2403). "Ehrlich conceived the idea of creating a 'magic bullet' drug to kill living organisms when he observed in his early work with aniline dyes that bacteria would take up the dye while the tissue remained unaffected. It was a first step toward the present-day extensive use of chemotherapy" (Heirs of Hippocrates 2159).
