EISENHOWER, DWIGHT DAVID, President . Typed letter signed ("Dwight D. Eisenhower") as Supreme Allied Commander, Europe; to Jesse James, State Treasurer of Texas, n.p. [England], 20 May 1944. One page, on printed stationery of the "Supreme Headquarters, Allied Expeditionary Force." TWO WEEKS BEFORE D-DAY, GENERAL EISENHOWER EXTOLS THE AMERICAN G.I." A prophetic letter extolling the qualities of the American soldier, two weeks before the top-secret Allied landings in Normandy. "I truly thank you for your message. It is always heartwarming to encounter an additional piece of evidence that fighting men and private citizens alike in our great country are standing firmly together in these critical times. Your confidence in the fighting qualities of the soldiers of Texas is completely justified. I have seen them in action. Happily I can testify to the same effect in the case of the soldiers from all other portions of our country. No man can contemplate the courage, fortitude, patience and devotion to duty of the great mass of our enlisted men and junior leaders without an inner feeling of immeasurable gratitude to them and an humble pride that he himself comes from a nation that has produced those magnificent qualities among its manhood. You may be sure that what men can do, they will do...."
