EISENHOWER, DWIGHT DAVID, President . Typed statement signed ("Dwight D. Eisenhower"), the Presidential Oath of Office, The White House, 20 January 1953. One page, 8vo . "I, Dwight David Eisenhower, do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States." In his first Inaugural Address, Eisenhower spelled out a number of "fixed principles" for maintaining world peace, emphasizing the importance for building up America's military strength to continue Truman's policy of the containment of the Soviet Union; it was under his administration that the nuclear arms race began and the Cold War commenced in earnest.
