Emerson Woelffer 1965 Gelatin silver print, with the photographer's signature and date in pencil on mount verso, generally in good condition aside from a series of light horizontal creases in the center of the image; remains of masking tape on the mount on recto and verso. Provenance: By descemt to Emerson Woelffer's granddaughter. Literature: Venus, Jupiter & Mars: The Photographs of Frederick Sommer John Weiss, Delaware Art Museum, Wilmington, 1980, illus., unpaginated. Frederick Sommer An Exhibition of Photographs at Philadelphia College of Art,Philadelphia College of Art, 1968, illus, p. 25. Emerson Woelffer (1914-2003) was a painter and leader in the avant-garde movement of Abstract Expressionism in the 1940s and 50s. He was acquainted with the artists Jackson Pollock Roberto Matta Josef Albers Jean Arp and Marcel Duchamp He taught at Black Mountain College in North Carolina, then at Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, and Chouinard Art Institute, Los Angeles. Sommer met the painter in Aspen in the 1951 and thereafter they were good friends until Summer's death in 1999. 13 x 8 3/4in
